If there was any doubt that a new leadership has taken over the Court, that was soon dispelled by the new Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno’s announcement that she shall not be giving any interviews. Her self-imposed silence contrasts starkly with Renato Corona who, as soon as he was sworn in, embarked on an orgy of media appearances as though he desired the public to link his face with the name. Not his replacement. While no one disputes that Sereno has a tough job confronting her, she has time on her side. In appointing her, Noynoy Aquino was in legacy mode, but Sereno will soon find out that the respect due to the primus inter pares is not freely given. - Philippine Graphic

The columnist Ma. Ceres Doyo makes a point of saying that neophytes during a hazing are “willing victims.” Likening violent initiation rites to serving pinikpikan, a chicken delicacy served in the Cordilleras that involves the pummeling of the live bird prior to cooking, said to improve the dish’s flavor, Doyo proposes that “hazing victims are partly to blame for their own deaths.” -Philippine Graphic
